While new environmental regulations for traditional ‘flame’ cremations have reduced some types of emissions, it remains an environmentally damaging process. Flame cremations inevitably require high non-renewable energy consumption, creating a large and damaging carbon footprint that adds to climate change.

People in the UK are increasingly concerned about their impact on the environment, and greener options for funerals are risingin popularity.

Harbour’s Water Cremation facility will be:

  • powered by 100% renewable energy from local sources;

  • sustainable, with a CO2 footprint 15% the size of a flame cremation;

  • without gaseous emissions, due to lower temperature requirement;

  • operated on a closed-loop system, so all by-products are recovered, and, often, recycled on-site.

What is water cremation?

Water cremation is a modern, innovative alternative to traditional cremation. The process works in two steps:

First step

The deceased is placed inside a pressurised chamber where heated water and potassium hydroxide return the body to its chemical components.

It seems a logical conclusion to our lifecycle since we are 60% water.

Second step

As with traditional cremation, the remains are turned into ashes and placed into an urn.

However, following a water cremation the ashes are pure white as they have not been through the combustion process.

Components

The by-products are the body’s natural chemical components of amino acids, sugars, salts and peptides.

At the end of this step, only bones and any dental or bodily implants remain.

Upon completion of both stages, the ashes are returned to your family. This often leads to a personally tailored memorial service or celebration of life, held at a time chosen by the family. Such occasions frequently occur during warmer summer months or times of the year with sentimental significance. The scattering of ashes often becomes a poignant part of these celebrations.

Water cremation at your crematorium

Harbour is constructing Britain’s first dedicated water cremation facility. It utilises proven technology in service for over 30 years in North America and is set in a beautiful tranquil 20-acre site in the South East of England.

We would like to extend the opportunity to partner with Harbour and offer water cremation at your crematorium. After the funeral service has taken place at your crematorium, Harbour would transport the coffin to our water cremation facility and carry out the water cremation, in keeping with the ICCM’s guidelines. The remains would then be delivered back to you.

This service offers all of the environmental benefits of water cremation, but without the costly initial investment. Harbour will provide all necessary support to you and your crematorium.
